Hackers' vandalism contest causes alarm

14:31 03 July 03

NewScientist.com news service

A hacking contest that will award points for breaking into web servers and scrawling digital graffiti over commercial web pages could disrupt normal internet traffic, according to a computer security firm.

The contest is scheduled to take place on Sunday 6 July, says US company Internet Security Systems (ISS), with points being awarded for each individual web site that is defaced.

Bonus points will be given for cracking sites that run on software and hardware with a better security record. First prize will be awarded to the hacker or hacking group that scores most points while attacking a maximum of 6000 sites.

Gunter Ollman, a UK consultant for ISS says preparations for the event appear to be underway. "There's been a lull in public defacements but a massive increase in pre-attack scanning," he told New Scientist. There are many of these contests, he adds, but this one has generated an unusually great amount of interest.

According to ISS, the Defacers Challenge was announced through the web site www.defacers-challenge.com. The site has since been removed by the internet service provider hosting it, for an alleged breach of the ISP's terms of use. But ISS say its consultants have also detected significant discussion of the competition on Internet Relay Chat (IRC) networks.

Yeah it's real alright, but I wouldn't worry to much about it, they will be going for the big iron, stuff that gets reported in the papers. Still with billions of web pages around even a few hundred hackers attacking them won't make much of a dent. Most of the reports I have seen claim that this will have very little effect on the internet at all.

Every time there's even a tiny bit of action found some security firm or other starts jumping up and down to gain some front page exposure. It's called PR. I can recall many AV vendors claiming that one virus or another had the potential to destroy the internet  The only this that they actually do is make me a lot of money when mum and dad computer user has to call me to remove a virus that their AV software would have caught if they had bothered updating over the past three years.

have fun all
