Post editing time limit removed

Given we can now track post edits, there is no reason to retain the time limit on editing your own post.

There is still a restriction on the thread title of 3 hours.

Enjoy!

This will make it increasingly difficult to make edits styled after Soviet era purges... :lookaround:

Awesome! Now when my keyboard acts retarded, and I realize it two hours later, I can fix it. WEWT!!!

The is issue is not with you staff guys being able to monitor any changes, but rather the regular users - such as little old me - being able to break the continuity and/or 'sense' of a thread or conversation.

Personally, I'd rather lose the freedom to edit my posts at whim, for the assurance of continuity and the integrity of forum discussions. Sure, you can Police it. But with thousands of posts per day being made, you'll never be able to do so.

So, do us all a favour, and change it back.... Extend it by all means..... but unlimited is just asking for trouble.

Good point. Maybe extending it to a day or so would be enough.

Re: Post editing time limit removed

I agree with AzH. Personally I'd allow ten minutes for correction of spelling/grammar mistakes. An unlimited time limit will be abused.

Jeff July 30th, 2009 01:52 PM

Re: Post editing time limit removed

I think the abuse is exaggerated. I don't believe it would be nearly as bad as everything thinks. If someone edits their posts the way azh suggests, they would most certainly be called out on it and only hurt their reputation.

AzH July 30th, 2009 01:59 PM

Re: Post editing time limit removed

Called out on it by whom? Someone who makes another post in the thread further derailing it? Perhaps the abuse is not going to be as bad as suggested (in what is an extreme example, I agree). But the benefits of such activity (unlimited editing) are not in the same league as the pitfalls.

Your call, Jeffy....

To be honest I've been on a number of forums which had no post edit limits at all and this fact was virtually never abused as far as I know.
If someone really has the need to edit their six months old posts, they have a personal problem to be honest.
Otherwise it helps a number of different threads by a very large number.
For instance various mods can keep the newest content in the opening post for easy access without needing to ask a mod to edit it in.

Further it we can stress single posts a lot more hammering it into the posters without them giving excuses that they thought those 30 minutes passed already.

Re: Post editing time limit removed

I support this change, there are risks but I'd expect the level of actual abuse to be rather small. Atleast it's worth a try, if it turns out the new feature does more harm than good, the old edit system could be reinstalled.

Great. Yeah, I don't think it was all that bad and if it doesn't work out than it can go back. But I don't think it'll be a problem.

Same here.
I like most people here think its worth a try.

Here's my 10 cents: KILL THEM ALL!!!!!!

Nah...it's not. Actually, give it a shot. See how it goes, if people are just fucking with it to be "funny" or "cute," then add a limit. The 30 minute deal wasn't that bad.

Exactly what I had in mind! :nodding: Everything has its up- and downsides. I for one welcome this change as an regular post editor :)
It's so annoying when I discover a typing or grammar mistake in one of my earlier posts and I ran out of 30 mins. Bothering an admin with 'please edit a letter' would be simply silly, ridiculous, and time-killing (for the admin).

Also, keeping the thread opener post up to date (e.g. adding download links to a mod which is expanding) is just great, instead of scrolling thru all the posts to find whether an update had been posted or not.

Also, notice that 'no edit timeframe' is already in use for the social groups ;)

That's why you quote it.

For me at least a few hours as I don't like having mis-spelled words... and go back and correct them later.

NiteStryker August 1st, 2009 05:19 PM

Re: Post editing time limit removed

I think its a good idea to extend the time limit for editing, but not unlimited. Who knows how often I will change my opinion to make it the opposite of the general public?

A week would be a better time cap but really nothing more than a day would be fine. If you really have an issue after a day, you can ask a mod anyways.

Monster_user August 1st, 2009 06:00 PM

Re: Post editing time limit removed

I'm bad with coming back and editing my posts. I often change my mind 10 times over a 30 minute period. So you guys will be seeing a lot of variations in my posts...

NiteStryker August 2nd, 2009 08:18 AM

Re: Post editing time limit removed

Eh if you are editing your posts after a generally accepted length of time, everyone will know and you will just loose respect.

Monster_user August 2nd, 2009 09:29 AM

Re: Post editing time limit removed

I often decide to add more information to my post, but nobody had replied when I decided to add more info. So I go back and edit it. When I am done editing, usually somebody has posted by that time... Sometimes not.

Nitegriffin August 2nd, 2009 09:30 AM

Re: Post editing time limit removed

2 days would be just perfect to me, as most of the times i come back in 24hrs periods. Time will prove whether this change is beneficial or a 'troublemaker'. In the meanwhile, double the security detail, and dig deep in the foxholes =p

In most of the times, someone (or many ppl) already jumps the post you're about to edit, so chances are little anyone will notice it. So you just make another post, being the latest of the thread, so it surely catches the attention, if it's something more or less important. At least that's the tendency I recognized.

Phoenix_22 August 4th, 2009 04:12 PM

Re: Post editing time limit removed

Shouldn't be a problem as long as people don't act cowardly and change their entire post afterwards. If you say something stupid you will probably be quoted either way though...

Haha. Love it. But if there's a tracking history there's no nee to get confused, the mods or whoever can just look into it and BAM. They know what the original post was.
