Post editing time limit removed

Given we can now track post edits, there is no reason to retain the time limit on editing your own post.

There is still a restriction on the thread title of 3 hours.

Enjoy!

This will make it increasingly difficult to make edits styled after Soviet era purges... :lookaround:

n0e's the best!

Awesome! Now when my keyboard acts retarded, and I realize it two hours later, I can fix it. WEWT!!!

No. I think he is a sucker of Satan's cock and should burn in the fiery depths of hell.

The is issue is not with you staff guys being able to monitor any changes, but rather the regular users - such as little old me - being able to break the continuity and/or 'sense' of a thread or conversation.

Personally, I'd rather lose the freedom to edit my posts at whim, for the assurance of continuity and the integrity of forum discussions. Sure, you can Police it. But with thousands of posts per day being made, you'll never be able to do so.

So, do us all a favour, and change it back.... Extend it by all means..... but unlimited is just asking for trouble.

Good point. Maybe extending it to a day or so would be enough.

I agree with AzH. Personally I'd allow ten minutes for correction of spelling/grammar mistakes. An unlimited time limit will be abused.

Re: Post editing time limit removed

I think the abuse is exaggerated. I don't believe it would be nearly as bad as everything thinks. If someone edits their posts the way azh suggests, they would most certainly be called out on it and only hurt their reputation.

Re: Post editing time limit removed

Called out on it by whom? Someone who makes another post in the thread further derailing it? Perhaps the abuse is not going to be as bad as suggested (in what is an extreme example, I agree). But the benefits of such activity (unlimited editing) are not in the same league as the pitfalls.

Your call, Jeffy....

Hey man, you edited your post!

So, I changed my mind.

[mod]I'm changing your post back to what it was[/mod]

But why? My opinion changed and I edited the post to reflect this...

But dudes, it was six months ago....

So?

etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc

To be honest I've been on a number of forums which had no post edit limits at all and this fact was virtually never abused as far as I know.
If someone really has the need to edit their six months old posts, they have a personal problem to be honest.
Otherwise it helps a number of different threads by a very large number.
For instance various mods can keep the newest content in the opening post for easy access without needing to ask a mod to edit it in.

Further it we can stress single posts a lot more hammering it into the posters without them giving excuses that they thought those 30 minutes passed already.

I support this change, there are risks but I'd expect the level of actual abuse to be rather small. Atleast it's worth a try, if it turns out the new feature does more harm than good, the old edit system could be reinstalled.
