Default Recommend me an Anime
Something that is serious, like how Bleach, Naruto Shippuuden and One piece is heading for. Something that is serious but does not make me flabbergasted in a weird way like Dragon-Ball Z.
I think it was like the creators all got drunk one day, everyone was raging and came together to mass-draw some comics which showed their inner rage with cartoon characters that punched at the speed of light in fury. DBZ was in my opinion, un-understandable.

But not entirely serious, with light humor like Fullmetal Alchemist and Vandread. Light humor doesn't include Soul Eater, it started out too "cute" and tried to be serious but kinda felt weird at the end.

Preferrably in the modern to sci-fi era.

Mai-HiME probably meets that criteria. Even balance of slapstick and serious, with sci-fi elements.

Of course you could also just watch Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, which is the best giant robot anime to ever grace this planet.

I like the old school stuff. Couple of Movies that are pretty good: Vampire Hunter D and Ninja Scroll.

Well honestly, TTGL is not playing on the anime channel over at my country.
And there are no DVDs being sold here probably due to the fact of its ecchi-ness of Yoko. Which is strange, since they have 'Desert Punk'.
