I was never a fan of the original Transformers, artwork never impressed me.

Loved later stuff and beastwars.

Zeta gundam was a decent mech and gundam series. probably one of my favourites.

I would classify Transformers as Mecha. The only drawback is that they are living sentient machines and not under a creature's control or piloted by a creature. I started to say human but then I remembered several mecha not piloted by humans.

MS-IGLOO I loved completely. They had a MS IGLOO 2 but never saw the end of it.

Macross Frontier had a couple of male characters but look at the female characters, they are drawn to attract a large number of male fans as well. Ranka, Nanase, Clan Clang, and Sheryl are all very popular.
